A NEW TERM IN MODERN WORLD VIDEO GAMING ADDICTION. Nowadays the trend of gaming is at a peak. Many YouTube channels stream live games and are earning really good. Game maker companies like Rockstar games who made the legendary GTA-V which was one of the best games of all time (my favourite too), the God of war franchise with its amazing storyline and now the game that is on every gamers mind even the ones who never preferred to play the game is playing this one that is PLAYERS UNKNOWN BATTLEGROUND (Pubg).
The craze for the game is so damn high that the developers had to put a daily limit for playing it, though the limit is also of 8hrs which is still very long.
These games have come with great enjoyment features in them. Making us temporarily forget daily life problems.
In short, these games are like a temporary escape from the real world but, but this escape can become addictive and can make you distant from reality and the real world.
VIDEO GAMING ADDICTION-
What really VIDEO gaming addiction is?
Video gaming addiction is a real mental condition affecting millions of people around the world.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes it as “gaming disorder” in their international classification of disease (ICD-11) as a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour, which may be online or offline, manifested by impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other life interests and daily activities and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences.
Although billions of people play video games and the majority of them do not have an addiction to video gaming and the WHO estimates the number of people with the addiction is 3-4%. the difference between a healthy fun gaming hobby and an addiction is the negative impact the activity is having in your life.
Typically a gaming addict will have a level of severity resulting in “significant impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational or other important areas of functioning,” and the pattern of gaming behaviour is “normally evident over at least 12 months for a diagnosis to be assigned, although the required duration may be shortened if all diagnostic requirements are met and symptoms are severe.”
WHAT CAUSES THE GAMING ADDICTION?
Video games are designed to be addictive using state of the art behavioural psychology to keep you glued. While playing games high amount of dopamine is released in your mind. Dopamine is happiness or anti-stress hormone. And overexposure to these games can cause structural changes to your brain.
The individual begins to live in a world where you expect instant gratification. Games are so immersive that it’s easy to play for hours and hours without even noticing that even a minute has gone. They allow you to escape and see measurable progress. They are social and create an environment where you feel safe and in control.
Game developers also deploy manipulative game design features such as in-app purchases,micro-transactions and loot boxes that some governments have declared illegal. Because they are a form of gambling.
Gaming addiction exists because the game making companies are the billion-dollar companies, and more the no. Of people, they have hooked on to the games the more money they make.
THE SIGNS OF GAMING ADDICTION-
1.preoccupation with the video games.-
The individual thinks about the previous gaming activity or anticipates the strategy for the next games. Gaming becomes a dominant activity in individuals life.
withdrawal symptoms when gaming is taken away. These symptoms are basically described as irritability, anxiety, boredom, craving or sadness.
the need to spend increasing amounts of time engaged in video games. This may be motivated by a need for the completion of increasingly intricate, time-consuming, or difficult goals to achieve satisfaction and/or reduce fears of missing out.
- unsuccessful attempts to control participation in video games.
- Loss of the interests in previous hobbies and entertainment as a result of and wit the exception of video games.
- Continued excessive use of the games despite knowledge of psychological problems. The individual continues to play despite a negative Impact.
- Has jeopardized or lost a significant relationship or job, educational or career opportunity because of participation in video games
If any 4-5 of the above symptoms are you expected to have in you. then you may have a gaming addiction. And should seek the help of a professional as soon as possible.
WAYS TO COME OUT OF THE ADDICTION-
The important thing to remember is that no matter what you’re difficulties you’re trying to overcome, you’re not alone. Now that gaming disorder has been recognized as an official disease. more and more people can seek the help that they need.
Restrict your access to video games-
The makers who provide addictive games want to flood the market can be requested to restrict access to them for at least to the sites that make them available.
2. Try to get more a physical hobby-
Try to get some physical activity as a hobby like any sport or dance or any musical instrument that also can entertain you.
Currently, there are no official treatments for gaming addiction. it totally depends upon your will power.
Even if don’t want to quit gaming forever, you might be amazed how much your life could change if you take sometimes away from video games. don’t look back a year from now and regret not taking action.
Just try to be in the real world instead of getting trapped in the virtual world that is not going to last more than a storyline.
Though the god war and the last of us storyline was one of my favourites, wish I could live once through it.
