Mi Mix Alpha – Is this too much?

Mi, a name that has been known to every person around the world. This brand has been known to produce smartphones that are not only cheap but also very durable and feature-packed. This brand is also known as the Apple of China because of the number of electronics they produce. Everything ranging from phones to speakers to even shoes, Mi makes it all. The company is also one of the most innovative ones in terms of phones. Mi has been offering flagship-level phone features to budget phones for a long time. Some of their most innovative features have always been provided on their Mix series. They have been offering features such as notch-less display, the beautiful waterfall display, and now they are taking things up to the next level with a full wrap-around collection.

The Mi Mix Alpha features a wrap-around display and some insane features. The company initially came out with this phone as a concept but now has announced small scale production. Let’s see how unique this phone is.

Design Of Mi Mix Alpha –

The Mi Mix has the following dimensions 154.4 x 72.3 x 10.4 mm. The phone is a little bit thicker than most of its competitors, but that is due to its unique wrap-around display. It is also a bit heavier, with the weight being around 241 grams. The phone, unlike its competitors, has a unique titanium alloy frame to support the value of the big folding screen. The back and front are the same as they are both displays and are made up of glass. The type of protection on the glass is unknown. This may be a cool-looking design, but this makes the phone more prone to damages as designing a case for this is virtually impossible. The phone also supports two nano sims with one on standby.

Display Of Mi Mix Alpha –

Since the Mi Mix Alpha is more of a concept phone, it lacks many of those flagship-level features. The display is a flexible, super AMOLED panel with 16M colors. The display is about 7.92 inches, and the phone has an unbelievable screen to body ratio of 180.8%. The resolution of this screen is approximately 2088 x 2250 pixels. As of now, there is no information about the refresh rate of this display or whether or not it is HDR 10 supportive. In my opinion, since this is the first version of a wrap-up display phone, the display will only support a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and it won’t support HDR 10 since this will lead to a massive increase in manufacturing cost.

Hardware Of Mi Mix Alpha –

The phone has a slightly improved version of the 2019 flagship Snapdragon chipset. It houses the snapdragon 855+, which houses the Adreno 640 GPU. The phone has a whopping 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of UFS 3.0 internal memory. The octa-core CPU, along with the modern GPU, performs amazingly. Gaming and editing are peanuts for this device.

In terms of software, the phone comes with Android 10.0 out of the box along with MI’s in-house MIUI operating system, which, according to me, is not that great. MIUI is full of ads that make it a very unsafe and cluttered UI.

Camera –

The phone has a triple camera setup. The primary lens is a wide lens with a 108 MP shooter with an aperture of f/1.7. It is wide and has a shutter speed of 1/1.33″,0.8µm. The 108 MP sensor is the same being used on the S20 Ultra as it was co-developed by Mi and Samsung. It has PDAF and Laser AF, but no OIS. The secondary lens is a telephoto lens with a 12 MP shooter with an aperture of  f/2.0. The lens is a 54mm telephoto lens with a shutter speed of 1/2.55″, 1.4µm. It also has a 2x optical zoom with dual pixel PDAF and Laser AF. The third and the last lens is a 20 MP shooter with an aperture of f/2.2 and is 13 mm ultrawide with a shutter speed of 1/2.8″, 1.0µm. It also has laser autofocus. The camera also has additional features like Dual-LED flash, HDR, and panorama. It is also capable of recording videos up to 3240p@30fps, 2160p@30/60fps, 1080p@30/120/240fps, 1080p@960fps.

The front of the selfie camera is the same as the rear camera setup as the phone uses the primary camera as the common camera for both rear and front.

Battery and Sensors and Speaker –

The device has a 4050 mAh non-removable Lithium-Ion battery that comes with 40 W of fast charging. It also comes with plenty of sensors, including Fingerprint (under display, optical), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass, barometer. The device lacks a headphone jack and stereo speaker setup.

My Verdict -

The Mi Mix Alpha is a concept phone with a very cool design. The wrap-around display indeed highlights the fact about how technology has come a long way. But if you think of it, the phone is not at all practical. One can not find the fair use of the wrap-around display. Also, the phone lacks many flagship features cut comes at a flagship price of 2500 euros, which is just too much. For me, this phone is a no go but kudos to Mi for the unique design.
